Heather Dawson (BA, DVATI, MA)
Instructor

I remember the day that I first heard of art therapy. I was working in an agency that provided services for young mothers where I was to create psycho educational groups to support parenting. To hold the attention of these young women I developed a creative approach using the arts to build on the stories of their lives. Several months into the running of this group, it was suggested that I would probably love art therapy. What followed changed my life.

My art therapy training at the Vancouver Art Therapy Institute was in the last class taught by Dr. Martin Fischer.  As a graduate I was invited to teach the studio/practice course at VATI bringing me into art therapy education and so adding my voice to its shaping.  Further studies and training in body centered psychotherapy and the expressive arts therapies brought my own interpretation to what it means to be a therapist using the arts.   Art therapy has continued to provide me with opportunities to maintain my own creative currents, to nurture this same current in others and to find commonality in these experiences in profound and important ways.

Heather Dawson is a registered art therapist, a body centered psychotherapist (the Hakomi Method) and has a Masters degree in expressive arts therapy and psychology. She maintains a studio practice in Vancouver and is a supervisor for agencies throughout the lower mainland of British Columbia.  Heather creates
workshops and collaborative learning opportunities using the arts.  She has traveled throughout Canada and Europe with her work.
