Patricia MacAulay (B.A., B.Ed., D.V.A.T.I.)
Instructor
I come from a small place (Prince Edward Island) but I have always had big ideas. I have travelled all over the world and have enjoyed countless work experiences – teacher, researcher, writer, editor, software developer, entertainment producer, event planner, and advocate for the rights of women and people with disabilities. You name it and I’ll try it if I think I can learn something and contribute to my community.
The biggest idea I have ever encountered, though, is ART. I was already in my thirties the first time I mixed paint and swept a brush across a canvas. I was mesmerized by the experience. At this first (and only) art class, my instructor told me that I had something beautiful happening and advised me to avoid further classes that could inhibit my natural expression. She tole me to “go big, go colourful, and have fun.” I followed her advice and grew into the practice of making art that comes straight from my heart and soul. Thank heavens for art! It supported me through many difficult personal challenges over the years. I had a vague sense that there was a profession called art therapy but was in my forties before I came face to face with the prospect of making it my work.
I was overjoyed to return to school at V.A.T.I. to learn how to support other people in their own full expression through visual arts. I graduated in 2007 and am now seeking ways to contribute to art therapy education and to facilitate art making in the community.
