Fulltime Diploma Graduates

2004 – Dease Lake, Northern BC

Since graduating from VATI in May, 2004, I have found myself in Dease Lake, a northern rural community in the northwest corner of British Columbia. Dease Lake is surrounded by the Cassiar mountains at the base of the mighty Stikine River. The views of the mountains, rivers, and lakes in this area are truly indescribable.

I work predominantly with First Nations Tahltan youth and children in the community. I work with a First Nations family support worker with the Ministry of Children and Family Development where we support families and the social and emotional development of children. I also see children and youth in my art therapy practice where I have the opportunity to witness the positive influence of art therapy.  Working in a small community is very rewarding; I work with individuals as well as in community education and support with other professionals. It is a true gift to see what can be achieved with a common goal and the work of many in a small community.

Although services are limited and I sometimes miss the luxuries of city life (and the winters are chilly!), the peace of the outdoors and the varied opportunities I have in my profession are great incentives. It seems as though I have made a home in the north! I look forward to seeing where this work continues to take me!
