Program Calendar


The eighteen month Advanced Diploma program consists of 4 parts:

  1. A 3 week residency in Vancouver
  2. followed by a 12 month distance learning component
  3. a second two week residency in Vancouver
  4. and concludes with a Final Project.

Part I: Three-Week Summer Residency in Vancouver

Summer Intensive:

  • Learning includes direct art therapy experiential learning, labs and course work. For some classes, preparation reading will be required in advance. Assignments will be submitted according to instructors’ requirements.

Courses include:

  • Art Therapy Training Group I
  • Art Therapy Techniques Lab I
  • Art Therapy Techniques Advanced
  • Assessment: Art Therapy Assessment Techniques – Interventions: Group and Family Art Therapy
  • Introduction to Practicum
  • Introduction to Supervision

Part II: 12-Month Distance Learning

Online Courses include:

  • Interventions:
    1. Child Art Therapy
    2. Adolescent Art Therapy
  • Art Therapy History and Theory

Practicum requirements:

  • 700 hours of art therapy practical experience arranged in a local school, agency, hospital or community setting in the student’s home town (350 hours direct client contact, with the balance being work related activities). The practicum site must be approved by the Vancouver Art Therapy Institute. Students are covered by liability insurance.

Supervision requirements:

  • 25 hours of individual Supervision via internet and teleconferencing

Part III: 2-Week Second Summer Residency in Vancouver

Second summer intensive conducted in a similar manner as the first.

Online Courses include:

  • Art Therapy Training Group II
  • Art Therapy Techniques Lab II
  • Assessment: Art Therapy Assessment (Field research)
  • Group Supervision
