Xu Wang, MC:AT

Instructor

Xu is a non-binary, queer, 1.5-generation Chinese-Canadian immigrant settler who works as a clinical counsellor and art therapist. Their approach to arts-based exploration is deeply personal, rooted in their lived experience as a self-taught artist.

VATI | Art Therapy Program Faculty | Peggy Clarkson, MA

Having witnessed the quiet, intimate process of their grandmother’s artistic growth, Xu learned from a young age that art is a practice that “de-centers” the dominant narratives of the world. They align their work with decolonial and anti-oppressive frameworks, infusing every learning space with curiosity, playfulness, and a touch of chaos.

Xu’s current artistic “inqueeries” challenge constructs such as healing, resilience, and mental health. Guided by intuition and a delight in the “weird and surreal,” their art hovers between the borders of binaries like “sane vs. insane,” “healthy vs. destructive,” and “productive vs. useless.” Xu is excited to expand beyond traditional art mediums by incorporating interactive processes such as role-play, virtual simulations, and video games. Through these processes, they aim to create new spaces for growth and exploration that push the boundaries of imagination.
