Richard Wainwright, PhD

Research Director

I believe we are all research-artists, and this perspective drives my passion for exploring everyday living—the kind of inquiry that unfolds as we navigate daily experiences, make sense of our surroundings, and strive to improve our life and the lives of others.

VATI | Art Therapy Program Faculty | Peggy Clarkson, MA

From the playful exploration of childhood, the creation of music, the tending of gardens, and the art of remixing and mashups—these moments showcase my natural curiosity and creativity. Through authentic conversations, collaborative problem-solving, intergenerational learning, and engaging with the interconnectedness of all living and non-living entities, everyday living offers countless opportunities for meaningful, dynamic, and transformative research.

My background encompasses many years of learning about creative arts therapies, culminating in a doctorate in arts-based research. Aside from my duties at VATI, I am also an adjunct professor at the European Graduate School, where I have guided graduate students as a supervisor and mentor. I have contributed to various academic publications, bridging theory with hands-on practice. Intrigued by the role of AI in expanding collaboration and creativity, I view it as a tool for playful experimentation and innovative connections. This fuels my commitment to exploring how everyday experiences, artistic inquiry, and evolving technologies can deepen human connection, enhance therapeutic practices, and expand the possibilities of what research can achieve.

How might you take on the role of a research-artist in your own everyday living?
