Art Therapy

Program Stream Options

We offer one art therapy diploma with two different start dates and study formats; please choose the program stream that is best for you.

One program stream is for students who live at a distance (Advanced Diploma); and one for students who live more locally (18-Month Diploma). Each program stream has the same application form and due date, prerequisites, courses, diploma and professional designation.

18-Month Diploma Program Stream

The 18-month diploma stream is designed for students who typically live geographically nearby, as there are 7 weekend in-person classes over the first 7 months of the program.

It is a blended or hybrid program that combines the benefits of face-to-face classroom learning with flexible, online learning and discussions; it has been designed to leverage the strengths of various learning modalities. The online learning component utilizes the platform Moodle for weekly lesson plans, as well as Zoom to further deepen and expand on various themes, foundational competencies, and practical skills. The studies focus on art therapy skills development, art therapy assessment and interventions, as well gaining an in-depth general knowledge of the field of art therapy. The first Art Therapy Diploma cohort at VATI enrolled in 1982.

Advanced Diploma Distance Program Stream

The Distance Diploma Stream is delivered through an online learning platform, supervision through video meetings, as well as two intensive residential learning over two summers in Vancouver.

The studies focus on art therapy skills development, art therapy assessment and interventions, as well as gaining an in-depth general knowledge of the field of art therapy. The intensive residential components (two weeks and one week, respectively) present direct experiential learning opportunities. The program accommodates people who are working full-time in their own community. The first distance Advanced Diploma cohort enrolled in the summer of 2002.
