Tristan Monague, MC:AT

Instructor

Tristan Monague is a member of Beausoleil First Nation, located in southern Ontario and his ancestry includes Potawatomi, Métis, Celtic and French.

He has a BA in psychology with dual minors in theology and Indigenous studies, a MA in counselling psychology with a focus on generational trauma, and an advanced diploma in art therapy from VATI, with his main objective and focus on the therapeutic applications of traditional art forms such as bone carving and the impacts on generational trauma. He is a Canadian Certified Counsellor through the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association and a professional art therapist through the Canadian Art Therapy Association.

Currently, Tristan is developing a new, internal mental wellness program for the AFN and their staff, as well as providing mental wellness support, teaching and training to the staff on self-care as well as the avoidance and recovery from burn-out.

Prior to joining the AFN, Tristan was part of the Indigenous Education team with the Calgary Catholic School District, as an Indigenous Wellness Worker, providing mental support and academic success to Indigenous students attending schools in south Calgary, Airdrie, Chestermere and Cochrane, and extending support to the students’ parents/guardians. He delivered a series of professional development programs for the teaching staff, administrators and executives on generational trauma, self-care, culture and identity, and co-facilitated sessions of the Blanket Exercise. Tristan was also part of the team that advocated for and co-facilitated the renaming of Bishop Grandin High School to Our Lady of the Rockies.

When Tristan is not writing his book, he spends time with his creative endeavours including bone carving, painting and cooking, or daily hikes.
